Loop was born in 1865 in Belmont, Ontario, the sixth child in a strict Methodist family. Loop married Edith Richardson in 1897 in Sault Ste-Marie, and had three children. They then moved and homesteaded north of Calgary and east of Airdrie, Alberta. Later they moved to Three Hills, Alberta, where Loop worked as a janitor for the school board. His wife died in 1931, and he later moved to Calgary, where he died in 1940.
